What is CDX Plywood ?
CDX plywood is a common building grade plywood, with letters in its name representing its quality grade and adhesive type:
Grade C: The front panel has good quality and allows for a small amount of defects (such as nodules and small cracks).
D-level: The quality of the back panel is relatively low, allowing for more defects such as patches and color differences.
X: Representing the use of Exterior Glue (outdoor adhesive, i.e. phenolic resin adhesive/WPP adhesive), which has moisture resistance but is not waterproof.
characteristic:
Low price, mainly used for structural support or concealed works (such as walls and roofs).
Surface roughness usually requires covering with other materials such as gypsum board and ceramic tiles.
Common thicknesses: 1/4 inch (6mm), 1/2 inch (12mm), 3/4 inch (18mm).
Function
1 Moisture resistance (non waterproof):
Suitable for short-term humid environments (such as temporary covering on construction sites), but long-term immersion in water can cause delamination.
Structural support:
High flexural strength, suitable for load-bearing scenarios such as roof lining and floor substrates.
Economy:
Cheaper than premium plywood such as ACX and BCX, suitable for projects with limited budgets.
CDX Plywood vs Regular Plywood | ||||
Type | Surface Quanlity | Adhesive Type | Usage | Price |
CDX | C surface+D surface, rough | Phenolic resin (moisture-proof) | Building structure, concealed works | low |
ACX | A surface is smooth+C surface is average | phenolic resin | Furniture, visible parts | rising-falling |
BCX | B-side+C-side, medium | phenolic resin | Structure or decoration with moderate requirements | centre |
OSB | chipboard | Waterproof adhesive | Replace CDX, but more hygroscopic | minimum |
Usage
Building Structure
Sheath: laid on the roof frame and then covered with asphalt tiles or metal roof.
Wall lining board: used for external or internal wall skeleton, external waterproof film and decorative materials.
Subfloor: laid on the floor keel, then covered with solid wood flooring or composite flooring.
2 Temporary works
Construction site enclosure and concrete pouring formwork (requiring application of release agent).
Industry and Warehousing
Shelf partitions and packaging boxes (in a dry environment).
Note
1 Not suitable for long-term humid environments:
If waterproofing is required (such as in bathrooms or outdoor terraces), Marine Plywood or pressure treated plywood should be selected.
The surface needs to be covered with:
The surface of CDX is rough and prone to wear when directly exposed, requiring the use of gypsum board, ceramic tiles, or painting.
Moisture proof storage:
When storing, it should be elevated and covered to avoid deformation caused by rainwater immersion.
