What is bending plywood?
Bending plywood, also known as curved plywood or flexible plywood, is a type of plywood that has undergone special processing to bend into an arc shape under wet or heated conditions and maintain its shape after drying. It is made by pressing thin wood sheets (usually 0.5-1.5mm thick) and flexible adhesives, with excellent plasticity and stability, suitable for various curved surface design, and is an ideal material for achieving curved surface design. It is widely used in furniture, construction, transportation and other fields. Its core advantage lies in balancing flexibility and strength, which can replace traditional solid wood bending techniques, reduce costs, and improve production efficiency. For projects that require streamlined styling, curved plywood is an irreplaceable choice.
Feature :
1. High flexibility and toughness
Using ultra-thin veneers (such as birch and poplar) stacked together to reduce internal stress and facilitate bending.
Some products can be bent directly at room temperature, while traditional plywood requires steam heating or slotting treatment.
2. Maintain shape
After bending and shaping, drying or cooling can fix the shape without easily rebounding.
3. Strength and stability
Less prone to cracking than solid wood, suitable for making lightweight curved structures.
4. Smooth surface
Can be applied with decorative materials (such as melamine, wood veneer) directly to visible areas.
Bending Plywood vs Regular Plywood | ||
Characteristic | Bending Plywood | Regular Plywood |
Flexibility | Can be cold bent or hot bent into complex curved surfaces | Difficult to bend, easily broken by forced bending |
Veneer thickness | Ultra thin (0.5-1.5mm) multi-layer overlay | Thicker (1.5-3mm or more) |
Adhesive | Flexible adhesive, allowing for elastic deformation | Rigid adhesive, prone to delamination when bent |
Usage | Surface modeling, artistic design | Flat structure, conventional furniture |
Price | High (complex process) | Lower |
Usage :
1. Furniture design
Curved wood furniture: chair backrest, sofa frame, curved table legs.
Customized cabinets: wavy cabinet doors, circular bar counter, curved partitions.
Children’s furniture: Safe and angular design, such as round desks and toy racks.
2. Architecture and Interior Decoration
Curved wall/ceiling: Create a streamlined spatial effect.
Staircase handrail: a curved structure that conforms to a spiral staircase.
Exhibition display: art installations, curved exhibition booths, mall decorations.
3. Vehicles and ships
Automotive/yacht interior: dashboard, seat backrests, cabin curved panels.
Aircraft cabin components: lightweight curved structure.
4. Musical Instruments and Crafts
Instrument manufacturing: Curved backboards for instruments such as guitars and violins.
Sculpture and Modeling: Complex Surface Shapes in Artistic Creation.
Purchase precautions
1 Bending radius:
The bending limit varies with different thicknesses and materials, and needs to be selected according to design requirements.
2 Moisture content:
Excessive moisture content may cause deformation after drying.
3 Compatibility of finishes:
If you need to apply leather or paint, choose a substrate with a flat surface.
